Being Kenyan is a blessing! Currently, we are going through series of challenges with some of our leaders propagating hate speech, leave alone the rampant corruption.

The Kenyan currency is dwindling daily against the dollar; interest rates have reached the roof, while the cost of living is unbearable.

That means life is becoming expensive and insufferable. However, the generous Kenyans have managed to do what the government they serve can’t do.

Kenyans are creative. Go to social media sites and you will see. The photoshops done, quotes, memes rolled out according to the latest happening, jokes and pictures. Who will ever stop loving that?

To some point, it brings out the spirit of accord. Social media has been an important platform that Kenyans use to spread the message of amity and unity. Rebuking people who try bring division among us and advocating for others rights. This is just one side of Kenyans people never appreciate.

The recent harmony shown for cancer patients has proven that this country has caring people.

People who will not watch their neighbour die if they can prevent it. Take the case of Emmanuel Otieno, alias Jadudi. He is a university student, diagnosed with brain cancer in 2012. After his story went viral on blogs and social media, Kenyans contributed Sh6.4 million within 48 hours, surpassing the Sh1 million target. This saw Jadudi’s surgery in India possible. Hats off for the blogger. For all the people who spread these news via social media; bravo to you. It doesn’t end there.

K24 news anchor Anjlee Gadhvi Noorani was not left out. She too was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2013. After raising her medical concerns, generous Kenyans contribute more than Sh6 million within hours! Just imagine having that huge cash within a day. The hash tag #ISupportAnjlee was a triumph!

The recent case of Janet Kanini Ikua has also shown how solid Kenyans can be. Janet was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer after a long struggle with waning conditions that saw her go through a series of tests.

“This is God’s work,” Janet said during an interview with Larry Madowo on The Trend show aired by NTV. The Nation Media Group organized a major concert at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi at the weekend under the #I Stand with Janet.

Various people came to the concert including artistes such as Sauti Soul, Daddy Owen and even Churchill, where they agreed to perform for free just to support Janet with her treatment at Apollo Hospital, India.

There are a lot of stories not covered that show our unity. This should continue as long as our country stays. The spirit of cohesion is important. We learned it the hard way in 2007-08. Let us prevent what we can. Daima mi ni mkenya, mwananchi mzalendo. (Forever I will be a Kenyan, a patriotic citizen)!
