More than 100 students in Likoni, Mombasa and Kwale County will benefit from a sponsorship programme by Base Titanium Company.The programme will for the first time include students studying medicine.Other students doing a variety of courses such as accounting, law, nursing and engineering were also selected after a rigorous and competitive process that saw over 1,000 students apply.Pius Kassim, the community relations manager at Base Titanium said beneficiaries of the programme will be mentored by the company to ensure they make informed career choices.Speaking on Monday, Kassim said the scholarship programme is in line with the company’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 which aims at ensuring inclusivity and provision of quality education for all by the year 2030.The selected students bring the number of students studying under the Base Titanium scholarship programme to more than 1000 as 950 more are already in the program which began in 2014.“Investing in Kwale youth is a cornerstone of Base’s community development programmes. We are empowering Kwale youth to have a cutting edge to compete fairly in the national and international labour market,” said the manager, as quoted by Baraka FM.A budget of Sh75 million has been set aside by the company for the 2017-2018 programme that is set to benefit students from Likoni and all the four sub-counties in Kwale County.
