If there is one thing that recent political developments have demonstrated to us with blinding clarity, it is that there is no love lost between veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.

When he was at the coast about a week ago, Ruto fired shots at Raila and accused him of plotting to sow discord in Jubilee through conmanship.

"You cannot eject me from ODM and then follow me to Jubilee thinking that you will remove. That is a daydream. It is not possible and it will not happen," he fired.

Even before the dust settled, Raila returned fire by launching a veiled attack on Ruto in Machakos, saying that those 'barking' were doing so because of the heat generated by the war on corruption.

What's interesting is that President Uhuru has remained largely silent on the feud as it unfolds apace, a seemingly out-of-character approach for the president who has been seen to come to the defence of his deputy in the past.

The question is why has the president opted for this approach?

There could be many reasons but the main reason is caution not to undermine the goodwill engendered by the dramatic handshake.

This is perfectly in keeping with his pledge to focus on achieving his big four agenda rather than engage in mindless politics.

He will not be seeking another term in 2022 so he has no interest in politicking as shaping his legacy is what is at the top of his mind.

President Uhuru's intervention would surely muddy the waters and trigger tensions.
