Kenyan giants Butali Warriors began the Africa hockey club championship on a losing note after going down 2-0 on Sunday to Egyptian favourites Sharkia in a fiercely contested duel.
In a match held at the City Park stadium in Nairobi, the two continental giants displayed quality play but it was Sharkia who emerged favourites.
Goals from Abd El Rahman and Ahmed Gamal in either halves were the determinants as the home team crashed in its first match of the tournament.
The win sends Sharkia top of pool B ahead of their clashes with Ghana Police and Niger Flickers who will also face Butali in the same pool on Tuesday.
In other matches played on Sunday, Exchequers defeated Weatherhead 6-2 while Ghana Revenue Authority thrashed Wananchi 11-0
