Ababu said the Labour Party he relaunched in 2016 was fully prepared for the polls and was ready to take on the country's largest political parties.

Ababu relaunched LPK after ditching his ODM secretary general position in July 2016 citing frustration from ODM's top leadership.

He argued that a section of ODM party officials did not accord him the respect he deserved as secretary general.

He left together with Paul Otuoma (Funyula, ODM) who has since returned to the Orange party and John Waluke (Sirisia, ODM) who is now a member of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party.

"We have planned well," Ababu said in Naivasha after the retreat.

"We are ready. And we owe nobody nothing. Now bring on August 8, 2017!"

During his departure from ODM, some Cord leaders criticized him for making the move saying the lawmaker was insincere.

ODM Chairman John Mbadi and Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo said they would de-campaign him in Budalang'i and ensure he does not retain his seat in August.

Late 2016, top ODM leaders from Busia County held a consultative meeting in which it was agreed that the party will field a strong candidate to contest against Ababu.

At the time, ten aspirants had expressed interest for the Budalang'i MP seat on an ODM ticket.

Ababu has so far toured the counties of Busia, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu, Mombasa, Kisii, Kilifi and Kwale popularizing LPK.
