Chania river which is among the  biggest rivers in Kiambu county is at a risk of becoming a danger zone in the near future due to industrial and human wastes being dumped into the river. This famous geographical feature, cuts through Thika town touching Kilimambogo and Gatanga Dam.

In the past three months, there have been piles of garbage deposited at the river bank. A private garbage company is suspected to be responsible for this.

Reports state that most of the waste is deposited at night when little to no surviliance available. 

Coincidentally, an underground sewage pipe was discovered to have been depositing its waste at the river at a corner known as Ndome.

According to the investigations, the sewarage pipe originates from Sigira Homes, an estate in Thika Town.

As a result residents in the area have taken to the streets in demonstration to ask the county government to intervene in protecting Chania River.

Speaking to angry residents in Thika town, the minister in charge of environment in Kiambu county county said the matter will be handled and promised to arrest anybody caught dumping along the river. He also said anybody found guilt will not only face court charges but will be  also handed over to NEMA for more legal actions.

The river is richly known for its tourist attraction in the area. It host the famous fourteen falls  which are close to kilimaMbogo hill yet another visitors park.On its southern part ,there is Blue post hotel ,a major player of hospitality industry in the town. The river also has crocodiles,and hippopotamus  and its green vegetation along the banks makes the place  so serene and an eye catching.
