Police in Eldoret town have arrested a middle aged man believed to be behind the cartels selling fake Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) recruitment letters to unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspect, Augustine Wambogo alias Major was arrested in an Eldoret hotel, Tuesday following a tip off from the public.

According to Eldoret West OCPD Samuel Mutunga, the 26-year-old was arrested with Sh726,000 cash together with several fake KDF calling letters.

Speaking to the press at the Central police headquates in Eldoret town, Mutunga said investigations into the matter had been launched and the suspect would be arraigned in court.

"The suspect is now helping the police with investigation as we seek to also arrest those he has been working with. We also want to advise the public to beware of conmen out to take advantage of them as KDF recruitment letters are not sold," he said.

The suspect was arrested together with Anthony Gitonga a youth from Meru county who claimed to have been conned Sh400,000 with a promise that he would be given the letter.

"I was told that if I pay that amount I will get into the KDF," noted Gitonga.

"I sold Miraa to get that money hoping I would succeed to join KDF which has been my dream," he added.
