Police in Eldoret were forced use tear gas canisters to disperse rowdy students who had blocked a section of the Eldoret-Iten road.

The students at Subaru Estate were protesting the killing of one of their colleague, at Kisii University Eldoret campus, who was attacked on Tuesday night at the estate.

They blocked the road along the Alphax College next to the Eldoret Airstrip, burning tyres and stoning motorists and pedestrians, paralysing transport.

Police arrived and dispersed them after they started cutting down trees to block the road.

According to students who mostly live in the estate, the area was insecure and the government had turned a deaf ear on their plight.

They said many people had been attacked by unknown gangsters yet the police patrol was minimal in the area.

"We are fearing for our lives because there are no police patrols here. The latest you can arrive  at the estate is 7pm. We want the relevant authorities to beef up security," one of the students, Donald Ochieng said, Thursday.
