According to area police boss Peter Katam, the 33kg of ivory is suspected to have been sourced from Kinale, Aderdare and kieni forests in Kiambu County.

Katam said they got a tip-top from members of public that the five were sourcing for buyers at Gatundu town and its environs.

Police, in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers traced them and posed as potential buyers of the ivory.

“They were arrested as they delivered the ivory to the already ‘customers’ in Gatundu town,” said Katam.

Katam thanked the residents for reporting the matter, urging them to always be on the lookout for such incidents and suspects who are involved in illegal trade.

Cases of illegal trade involving ivory have been rampant, with suspects nabbed in different parts of the country with the precious and valuable products.

The suspects are being held at Gatundu police station waiting to be arraigned in court.
