The just concluded political season had seen candidates’ coin slogans that would resonate with the people and easy to remember.
However, in Nakuru, Bahati ward MCA-elect John Ndungu Ndonyo alias Segesa made an unconscious slogan that spring him to victory.
The 59-year-old is not well conversant with both Swahili and English language. In his political campaign, Ndonyo translated some of his statement directly from kikuyu to Swahili that left the crowd in stitches.
Most famously, the MCA-elect promised to “Segesea watu maji bila ndoro ama muju” (will drill wells to provide the residents with clean water which is not muddy).
The word Segesa incorrectly translated from kikuyu word “Thegetha” meaning drill earned him the nickname. The electorate amused with the statement took to the Bahati constituency social media forums prompting him to adopt the slogan “Maji Bila Ndolo” (water which is not muddy).
And as it turned out, that is all Ndonyo needed to Segesa into the Nakuru County Assembly. Ndonyo elected as an independent candidate floored the incumbent and Jubilee candidate Peter Mwangi alias Birishiba on Tuesday’s polls garnering 6,304 votes.
