[Photo: twitter.com]The man who has been trending on social media since Wednesday after the August 8 poll has been identified. His name is Martin Kamotho alias 'Githeri man'. He is a resident of Kayole in Nairobi.Speaking to Citizen TV on Wednesday evening, he said that the photo of him holding a small paper bag of githeri while 'munching' absentmindedly, was taken at Imara Primary School in Kayole where he is a registered voter. The photo has since gone viral. He, however, indicated that he wasn't aware who took the photo and how it got online."I am not in any social media platform. It took me by surprise when a friend of mine showed me a photo of myself standing with President Kenyatta, William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga and his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka somewhere in State House," said Githeri man referring to one of the memes going round the social media.Kamotho, who has become an instant celebrity, told Citizen's Swale Mdoe that the Citizen reporter who reached out to him at his work place, did so through his aunt's phone because himself doesn't own a phone. He added that he works with the Nairobi City Council as a trench cleaner and was 'somehow surprised when news reached him that the media was looking after him'."I wondered, is it wrong to eat githeri while waiting to vote? I had woken up so early and when it became obvious that I would not be able to vote as fast as I had expected, I had to excuse myself and get something to eat to be able to withstand the long lines. My 'githeri' was worth Sh20. I could not afford to leave the station without voting for my candidates of choice" he added.Well, by the look of things, 'Githeri man' might be on your TV/phone screens a little bit longer as already two popular comedians (Churchill and Mzee Kiengei) are looking after him to feature him on their popular TV comedy shows.
