According to the government, a number of youths who are believed to be leading some of the terror attacks in the region are radicalized Al-Shabaab operatives.

Speaking to the press in Garissa town on Saturday, North Eastern regional commissioner Mohamud Saleh said that the government has the names and the relatives of the youths who are believed to be working for the Al-Shabaab to terrorize residents of North Eastern.

“We are engaging the elders from the affected areas to talk to this youth and prevail upon them to surrender. so far 3 of them have surrendered and two have been arrested,” said Saleh.

“I am still appealing to these youths to give up their terror activities and surrender to us. We are ready as a government to rehabilitate them. However, if they fail to heed our advice then we shall go for them,” he added.

He further commended security officers working in the region for suppressing Al-Shabaab attacks.

Saleh said that despite the huge successes in curbing Al-Shabaab attacks in the region, the threats by the Somali based terror group remain real as witnessed recently in Wajir.

“We are not out of the woods yet. There is more to be done and we should not rest on our laurels. the militants will always use the least opportunity presented to them to hit us,” said Saleh.

Saleh welcomed the cooperation between area residents and the security personnel.

“Area residents can now go about their normal business without being worried,” he added.
