Cabinet Secretary Joseph Mucheru at a past event [Photo/kenyanewsagency.go.ke]The government of Kenya has agreed to take issues relating to digital technology very seriously in 2017.It started with migration to digital television, to providing primary schools with laptops, and then providing access to government services online. Another move took place Thursday when Joseph Mucheru, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, launched a training for young people to work and earn online.​Speaking at Kenyatta University, the CS said there is a need to explore the opportunities the internet has to offer. In Kenya, close to 40,000 people are fully depending on the internet as their sole source of income and the number is increasing day by day.In his statement, Mr. Mucheru said the government is soon going to be uploading work on several internet platforms which will allow Kenyans to work online. He explained how a country like Denmark has fully integrated these operations with the public and those who are unemployed are constantly absorbed to work for the government thus increasing indirect employment for its people.  Kenya is said to have great internet coverage and broadband speed with an estimation of 55% of the total population having access to the internet.In addition, the government has set up hotspots in various parts of the country where it is projected that every constituency will have a Constituency Innovative Hub (CIH) with wifi by the year 2030.Areas like Limuru Town are well covered with the internet thus making it an ideal place to work.Working online does not require one to have many qualificaations, with only basic O-level and computer knowledge a person can qualify to work and earn online."Various jobs and tasks are always uploaded to online platforms and in some cases, some jobs are not taken due to insufficient workers to handle the task," says Mucheru.To ensure Kenyan youth remain at the competitive edge with international freelancers, the Kenyan government has opted to inform, train and simplify the process of accessing these jobs by introducing [ajiradigital.com] a government website which will link employers with workers.He said plans are underway to have computer libraries all over the country that are fully equiped with the internet access, where Kenyans will undergo training to improve their computer skills."This being the first class to be trained, they are expected to graduate in a month's time [July 16th] and immediately be supplied with jobs from the government," said the CS.
