The prices of flour and bread were expected to drop following removal of tax by Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich in last week’s budget.

The reduction of the prices is yet to become a reality and the government had warned it would reverse the policy if the supplier and millers continue to charge the public above the new set price.

“Failure to which, I will reverse the policy. In addition to further lower the cost to wananchi, the importation of maize during the next four months will be duty free. I expect, therefore to see a reduction of prices for these basic commodities which enjoyed by majority of our people,” Mr Rotich said while reading out the budged last week.

Prices of maize meal and bread have in recent months gradually been rising forcing the government to zero rate the commodities remove VAT after public outcry.
