A governorship aspirant in Kisii has hit out at leaders perpetuating clannism politics during their campaigns.

Mr Boniface Omboto, an architect, termed clan-based politics as an outdated and retrogressive practice that should be shunned by candidates seeking elective seats in the county.

“We cannot have the same vicious cycle of politicians going around recycling the same old clan alliances. What our people urgently need is economic empowerment, not clan wars,” he said was speaking at Ogembo town during a rally.

He said he would start cottage industries in each of the nine Kisii County wards as an antidote to unemployment among the youth.

“At the time our youth need jobs, we the leaders are busy propagating clan based politics. The resultant effect of this is that we will forever be tied to a life of mediocrity and we will not move forward,” said for the former Bungoma based planner.

He said it was high time the youthful leaders were given a chance to lead and urged any elderly political leader seeking elective seat to go slow on their on their political ambitions.

“Our senator (Chris Obure) and governor( James Ongwae) are both aged leaders who should now be offering guidance to young leaders such as myself instead of unnecessarily crowding the race for the governorship,” he said adding that the two have  outlived their usefulness and cannot be expected to give fresh input into the county’s development.

Mr Obure however told those who criticize him on account of his age that he was still young enough to be given the one term he needs to lead the County.
