[Photo/migrationology.com]Food vendors and hawkers in Kiambaa sub-county, Kiambu County operating without health permits from the county government have been warned.James Nduati, a public health officer at Kihara Sub-county Hospital has said that the food vendors risk being arrested as many of the existing and upcoming food outlets in the town do not meet standard public health regulations.“It is illegal to engage in such business and fail to acquire a license especially in the wake of cholera outbreak experienced in some parts of the country,” Dr. Nduati on Tuesday at Kihara shopping center during a sensitisation exercise.Nduati noted that several food kiosks and butcheries have been operating without health permits which are illegal and could also cause harm to unsuspecting customers who visit the eateries.He said meat should be inspected before being sold in butcheries to rule out infection by diseases which could be transferred to humans through consumption.The health officer noted that food sold under unhygienic conditions could cause serious health problems to the public such as cholera and typhoid.Dr. Nduati warned that those operating without authorization will soon face the law as officers from his department which has started combing the area to identify those breaking the public health regulations.He said an audit of all butcheries and food outlets will be undertaken by a health officer to ensure they meet hygienic standards and sell fresh meat to the consumers.
