Kisii County is set to contract youth groups to help deal with garbage eyesores in urban centres in the region.

The County’s Water, Energy and Environment executive Dr Moiro Omari said Wednesday the training will be done in a few weeks’ time.

At least 800 youth would get direct employment and hundreds others indirectly through the programme.

Efforts to get alternative land have also born little fruit with initial attempts to set up a dumping site at Gesonso area, in Bonchari Sub-County getting thwarted after the residents raised protests over the same.

He said with e new arrangement they may not require big land to process litter.

Already Sh 10 million has been set aside to help in the construction of the first of the plant.

Kisii town has a population of more than 400,000 residents.

 Dr Richard Omboga, a University lecturer and waste management consultant says the garbage with toxic substances is filtering into water sources posing health hazards to the residents.
