The Kenya Ports Authority's (KPA) has adopted the elaborate Green Port Policy (GPP).

The adoption of the policy aims at promoting environment conversation in Mombasa and its environs. All ships docking at the port of Mombasa will be expected to use electricity instead of diesel upon arrival. Paul Maringa, Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary, confirmed that the implementation of the plan has already been drafted as both the national and county governments put in place measures to enhance environmental conservation. Speaking during the opening of the first national workshop by Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre for Africa Region (MTCC-Africa) in Mombasa, Maringa said that the adoption of the policy will ensure the operations at the port comply with the international standards. "The move will enable port authorities to assess the overall impact of port operations on environmental degradation, identify mechanisms of complying with international standards and design an action plan with best practices for effective implementation," said Maringa, as quoted by the Standard.Under the new policy, KPA is expected to provide electrical power to all the vessels calling at the port. KPA in collaboration with Trademark East Africa has established a number of power sub stations at the port berths.
