The Kenya Power and Lighting Company KPLC in conjunction with the National Government has launched a Sh 65million street lighting project.

The branch manager Kisii, Chris Omwenga said that the project will be implemented in trading centres across the County in a move aimed at encouraging a 24-hour economy.

He said that the first phase of the project was already complete at Daraja Moja – Getare, Kisii police- Jogoo, Mwembe Junction – Kisii University, Daraja Mbili and Nyanchwa estates and had cost Sh 42 million.

“This is a government sponsored programmed that is aimed at ensuring that Kenya achieves a 24 hour economy,” said Mr Omwenga in an interview in his office.

The second phase that is ongoing in Keroka, Nyamataro, Gesonso, Egesa, Jogoo, Gekomu and Tosha will cost an added Sh 52 million.

Later it will start in Suneka, Masimba, Ogembo, Nyamarambe, and Kenyenya towns and will cost Sh 71 million.

The two projects will be complete by the end of the year.

 “We plan to erect Concrete Street poles along the roads then the lights will be connected through overhead cabling, said Mr Omwenga, adding that, it will help curb vandal cases.

He said that already poles had been erected around the Kisii stadium and technicians were installing cables and lamps.

Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta last year launched a Sh 1.2 billion national street lighting programme in Mombasa.

President Kenyatta said that the programme will be implemented in trading centres across the country in a move aimed at encouraging a 24-hour economy by providing job opportunities and ensuring growth in various sectors nationally.
