Kisii County is yet to take steps to set aside funds for replacement of hospital roofs with asbestos long after concerns had been raised over their safety.

A source at the hospital  water used in the facility is tapped from the roofs exposing more danger to the patients.

In the US, asbestos is classified as a human carcinogen by the Department of Health and Human Services .

The World Health Organisation reports that about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace.

Studies say exposure to asbestos may pose the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma (a relatively rare cancer of the thin membranes that line the chest and abdomen).

Asbestos exposure is said to affect the lungs causing shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage .

He said subsequent follow-ups for explanations to medical director Geoffrey Otomu about what happened with the proposal to replace the roofing has not borne fruits.
