The trachoma disease will be a thing of the past in Narok and neighbouring Counties by 2019.

This is after the Operation Eyesight Universal through the Narok county referral hospital health department announced measures it has put in place through its trachoma eradication programme to see the county being trachoma free by the end of 2019.

Speaking in Morijo primary school  in Loita, regional manager for Operation Eyesight Universal, Alice Mwangi, said that through their partnership, over 300 000 people living in trachoma prone areas have accessed medication and are now free from the disease, while more than 1000 have benefited from the surgeries they have been conducting.

"Our main agenda is to make sure by the end of 2019 trachoma will not be an issue to be talked about in Narok County and neighboring Counties. This will see us along way in the fight against the deadly disease." said the manager.

During a project inspection tour it was realized that a project in which pupils are taught the importance of hand washing and maintaining personal hygiene has been a great boost in the fight against trachoma, and as a result the pupils are now being used as ambassadors intheir communitiesThe Maa community has for long been affected by the disease owing to lack of sanitation facilities including toilets, but through the sensitization they have now embraced building of pit latrines thus lowering the risk of the disease spreading as rapidly as was the case  earlier.
