National schools in Kenya are set to start admitting day scholars.

Speaking in Mombasa when he addressed the ongoing head teachers’ conference, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi asked heads of the 103 National schools in the country to make application for the programme, confirming that it is already rolled out.

According to the CS, any student living near a national school and who wishes to go back home after classes shall be allowed.

However, the news has not been received well by parents and observers.

According to a column that ran on Standard, the new arrangement will be an opening for deteroriation of standards since "the young boys and girls always want to be at home".

"Being in school means the students concentrate on learning and have little or no access to distractions as the ills in the environment at home. Having the suggestion implemented means students will peddle or sneak in drugs, mobile phones and such student unfriendly things that could threaten the state our children in the schools," reads part of the argument.
