Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has defended the quality of the armored personnel (APC), after Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi had previously challenged the minister to assure the public of the quality of the vehicles sometimes last week.

This comes a week after eight people including seven police officers lost their lives when the vehicle they were in ran over a roadside bomb in Lamu.

“We need to understand these equipment because there are concerns that they are not properly secured to protect officers on duty,” said Wandanyi.

Wandanyi also said that there were serious concerns over the state of the APC’S that they were not built properly to protect officers’ lives.

Nkaissery defended the state of the APC’S while also regretting the incident. He said the officers died due to the impact of the explosion but the APC’S were intact.

In the past some other personnel have complained about the quality of the armored vehicles, in one incident a group of GSU requested the suppliers to try the vehicles themselves on durability and efficiency.

“The APC’S are up to the required standards and their quality meets the international standards,” Nkaissery said.
