The National Lands Commission (NLC) has asked Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to ensure police don’t evict squatters from a controversial piece of land in Bamburi, Kisauni.

NLC commissioner Samuel Tororei said Boinnet should ensure his officers in Mombasa halt the eviction of squatters from the land parcel Number 423/SEC.1/MN/ BAMBURI TANGE.“Facilitate enforcement of the status quo for peace and tranquility to prevail in Utange, Lamkani village,” said Torerei on Thursday as quoted by the Star.He said the squatters in Lamkani are still being harassed by one Gladys Njeri Kagiri who claims ownership of the land which measures about 135 acres. He accused her of using the police to eject squatters and destroy their homes. This, he noted, is in spite of NLC chairman Muhammad Swazuri cautioning against the move.“He (Swazuri) had written to Njeri and the squatters to maintain the status quo until the NLC resolves the matter,” Torerei said in a letter to Boinnet dated August 18.
