Matatus have been urged not to increase bus fares so that eligible voters can go to their stations and vote.

Giving the request, Matatu Owners Association chairperson Simon Kimutai said he was reaching out to even those who are not members of his association.

"I appeal to all MOA members, and even those who are not bona fide members, to have normal fares until the exercise is over. This would contribute to the democratic growth of our country," he said on Monday as quoted by the Star.

This follows cases of commuters getting stranded because either hiking of fares or no buses at all.

Also, some long distance saccos had doubled the fares, with the Nairobi-Kisumu route initially charging Sh800 now asking for Sh2000.
