Kisii County governorship aspirant Manson Nyamweya has vowed to fire all employees in the devolved unit that have passed the official retirement age.

He said the delivery of services by the county government was hampered by a large number of elderly staff still in service despite having reached the mandatory retirement age.

“I am concerned that we have a number of elderly staff that are still working despite the fact that they are past the official retirement age. This is a big threat to the county government’s efficiency and I will send them home as soon as I assume office in order to address the situation,” said Mr Nyamweya.

He said the county and nation at large had a surplus of qualified professionals who could take the retirees’ positions, adding that the problem of youth unemployment could be solved by effecting the retirement of elderly workers.

“It is not fair for young graduates and other highly skilled professionals to languish in the ranks of the unemployed while their rightful positions are still taken up by elderly workers who should be at home taking care of their grandchildren,” said the aspirant who is also the incumbent South Mugirango MP.

Mr Nyamweya, who is the Kenya National Congress party leader, was addressing residents of Bomachoge Borabu constituency when he toured the area on a campaign tour to promote his governorship bid.

The lawmaker was accompanied by KNC senatorial aspirant Richard Atemba and women representative aspirant Norah Nyamwamu.
