We will be heading to the ballot box on August 8. Already, our entire space is awash with song and dance, helicopter beauty contests, debates, TV appearances etc.Disruption from our electoral process is always big in social and economic costs. Some people see some upheaval as a necessary cost of democracy while others argue that it need not be that high. One huge cost is having a divided people unable to benefit from the synergies of diversity. Our organisations are populated or patronised by political beings be they staff, customers, members, patrons, benefactors, worshipers, etc. How does one position itself so that the heat, hostilities in the political arena do not seep in and create a toxic, less productive environment? The first way, is, long before any elections are called, build an organisation that has good representation in terms of ethnic, gender, age, racial, disabilities and other diversity areas. An organisation without diversity is in itself a problem. It is boring, stifling and lacking in creativity. Same views, language, stories and experience day in day out can stunt any organisation and leave it locked in the legendary box, unable to think. If a person works, lives, worships and plays only with people who carry his views, what are the chances of innovation or conquering the world beyond his/her narrow cocoon? For corporate and individual excellence, every CEO and HR manager has a job to source talent from all over. Legal compliance is only a secondary threshold.
