Is there a story unfolding in your community? Let Hivisasa know

This is because they are among the leading killer cancers in Kenya and the world at large. But did you know that penile cancer also exists?

Cancer can affect any organ in the body. The penis, which is the male reproductive organ can also be affected too. This may be a shock those who though it never existed.

Extensive research in this rare type of cancer has been hindered by noncompliance of men revealing themselves to be used as specimens.

But what is penile cancer all about?

It is caused by a number of things. One of them being a virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that also causes cervical cancer.

Individuals with tight penis foreskins find it difficult to clean it, thus enhancing inflammation that can gradually progress to penile cancer.

Smoking and other unhealthy lifestyle habits like excess fats can also be a risk factor. This can be modified.

However, other risk factors like genetics can’t be changed. Men with HIV/Aids have a higher risk of developing this cancer.

Penile cancer presents with change of colour and thickening of the skin around the penis. Discharge from the penis and sores around the head (glans penis) can also occur.

How can one know that he has the cancer? Although these symptoms may be similar to those of Sexually Transmitted Infections like syphilis, the doctor will ask you different questions and take part of the affected area for examination.

Preventive measures include circumcision, having only one sexual partner, going for regular checkups and living healthy lifestyle habits.

In case of familial predisposition, early screening is usually important so that treatment can be initiated quickly and on time.
