Despite claims by NASA leaders that planned demonstrations will be peaceful, the protests have always turned violent, often leading to massive destruction of property. In recent weeks, Raila Odinga, the NASA presidential flag bearer, has been calling on his supporters to stage demonstrations as a way of forcing a number of unreasonable changes at IEBC ahead of the October 26 polls. But the demos have led to the stoning of innocent people’s cars, closing down of businesses and robbing of passers-by in broad daylight. In Kisumu and other NASA strongholds in Luo Nyanza, the demos have provided an opportunity for goons to look from established businesses, leading to what acting Internal Security Cabinet Secretary has called economic sabotage.
