A Turkish Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Mombasa after it developed mechanical problems.

Flight TK 673 which had 121 passengers and six crew on board, had taken off at about 3.58am on Friday.

The flight was bound for Istanbul from Moi International Airport, Mombasa.

According to The Star, the incident happened shortly after takeoff, with initial reports indicating that one of the engines had failed causing pilot Volkan Nihat to circle for hours as the damage was being assessed.

Confirming the incident, Coast police boss Larry Kieng said the plane landed safely at about 7.20 am.

No injuries were reported following the incident.

Turkish Airlines operations manager Mohamed Said said the passengers were taken to Whitesands Resort and will stay there until further notice.

"They will stay at the hotel until we get another plane. We will cater for all costs," he said, as quoted by the daily.

Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa lauded security agents for quickly responding to the situation.

"We are all safe. We thank staff for their cooperation," he said.
