People living with disability (PLWD) in Lamu County are asking for representation in county government appointments.

Their spokesperson Simon Njagi says Governor Fahim Twaha should ensure they are appointed in county leadership.

He asked Twaha to consider them as county executives and nominated members of county assembly (MCAs).

“We're people who have also gone to school and acquired various skills. We can work just like any other person out there. We can deliver. We should be appointed so that we also get an opportunity to serve and feel like we are part of the lot,” said Njagi as reported by the Star.

“We know better who can represent us where. We do not want direct appointments of someone who does not even know who we are,” added Hindu Abdalla.

Njagi noted that former Governor Issa Timamy’s regime didn’t appointment them in leadership.

“We did not have a single person living with disabilities anywhere. We visited the governor on many occasions asking to appoint even just one of us, but that didn’t happen,” he said.

He added that most of the infrastructure in public offices, hospitals and schools are not disability-friendly thereby denying them crucial opportunities and services.
