According to area police boss James Ng'etich, the suspect, Kelvin Nzau Muthoka, was arrested following a tip-off from members of the public after he tried to pay for beer using the fake cash.

"The bar owner became suspicious when the suspect issued him with a fake Sh1,000 note to settle his bill and immediately alerted us, " said the OCPD on phone.

"Our officers rushed there, arrested the suspect and upon searching his pockets recovered 25 more fake notes in Sh1000 denominations," he said.

The police chief said Muthoka will be arraigned in court tomorrow to face money laundering charges.

In September last year, two men were arrested in Ikutha, Kitui South, after they were cornered with Sh1.4 million in fake Kenyan currency stashed in a backpack.

Area OCPD Kingsford Nyaga, said they nabbed Katikit Ngole and David Sang and managed to net the contraband which was in Sh1,000 denominations.

“We suspect they intended to distribute the fake notes to unsuspecting business people in Ikutha town and its environs but we were able to foil their mission in time,” he said.
