Whereas the August 8 election was seen as an opportunity for political heavyweights from the Coast region to make a comeback after many years in the cold, many of them failed in their ambitions after facing heavy defeats.

Former Likoni MP Suleiman Shakombo is among the biggest losers after suffering his third defeat in a row, when he lost to ODM's Mishi Mboko.The former Heritage Minister had lost the previous two elections to Masoud Mwahima who was also sent parking by Mboko, bringing to an end his 10-year grip in the constituency’s politics.Ananiah Mwaboza, who served as Kisauni MP for three years is another big casualty after Jubilee candidate Suleiman Shahbal failed to clinch the Mombasa governor seat.Mwaboza has been in the political cold since 2007.Former Garsen MP Danson Mungatana who was gunning for the Tana River governor seat failed in his bid as he lost to ODM's Dhado Godana, a lose that extends his stay in the political cold to 2022.Immediate former Kenyan ambassador to Tanzania Chirau Ali Mwakwere also lost in the Kwale governor race after being thrashed by Salim Mvurya.Mwakwere lost the county’s senator race in 2013 to the late Boy Juma Boy.Also in the list of big poll losers is former Kaloleni MP Kazungu Kambi who performed dismally in the Kilifi Governor race after losing to Governor Amason Kingi.
