The domination of private schools in National examinations dwindled after public primary schools registered improved performance in the 2017 KCPE results, Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has said.

Speaking during the release of 2017 KCPE results, the CS said the trend is attributable to successful implementation of teachers’ appraisals and performance contracting.

“The second-best candidate is from a public primary institution and in the top 100, public primary school slots have increased considerably this year,” he said.

Sharon Murega from Kathingiri Day and Boarding Primary School in Meru County scored 447 marks after tying with Sharon Muthoni from St Peters Elite Gilgil, Nakuru County. The CS added that this year, 9,846 candidates scored 400 and above marks as opposed to last year’s 5,143 candidates adding that all will join National Schools.

“All candidates with 400 marks and above will be absorbed in our National schools regardless of whether they were in private or public schools, we will not discriminate our children,” he said.

Matiang’i commended primary school teachers terming them heros and heroines after improved performance without any form of exam malpractice reported in 2017 KCPE results.
