Former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe. [Photo: nation. co.ke]Since the deposed Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was put under house arrest last week and the military took control of the country, NRM leader Raila Odinga has been heard warning President Uhuru Kenyatta that the same could befall him.According to Raila, Uhuru has become a despot like Mugabe who is willing to cling to power by all means. And now that Mugabe has finally resigned from office following sustained pressure from the military, people, the international community to name but a few, Raila could be energized to think that if he keeps 'the fire burning', Uhuru may also resign. If the strongman of Zimbabwe did it, who is Uhuru not to? This is a fallacy and here is why.Comparing Kenya and Zimbabwe is like comparing light and darkness. Mugabe is a well-known dictator worldwide who served for 37 years uninterrupted.

On the other hand, Uhuru has served for only four years after winning the 2013 election free and fair according to many observers. Well, the same may not be said of the repeat poll, but the fact that it was sanctified by the Supreme Court, Uhuru can walk with his head raised high.

Also, Kenya is known globally as one of the most progressive democracies in Africa. That could be the reason that despite Raila hopping from one Western capital to the other trying to sell a different narrative, it may not have worked for him so far.Secondly, Raila seems to be the only one who believes that Kenya has become a dictatorship under Uhuru. It is a belief among a large section of Kenyans that since Uhuru came to power, not much if any, democratic gains have been reversed. Freedom of speech, free press, freedom of association among other things are still enjoyed by Kenyans without limit. All these were desires among Zimbabweans under Mugabe's rule. Raila's narrative only seems to be packaged to benefit him.Another thing is that many Kenyans have no driving urge for that change to push for the things Zimbabweans were looking for. The reason why Zimbabwean ruling party and the opposition united to oust Mugabe is that they all felt Mugabe and his 'slay queen' Gucci Grace were their common enemies. There isn't such an agreement among Kenyans. Not even all of Raila supporters want to listen to his rhetoric after Monday's Supreme Court ruling. Finally, many Kenyans are actually politically fatigued than charged for change. Many say that the electioneering period was way too long, thus too much politics and now they want a break to go on with their normal lives. If Raila is fired up for change, Kenyans may be otherwise!
