President Uhuru Kenyatta has spent billions of shillings to construct and rehabilitate numerous roads in Kisumu County in the last four years, greatly improving transportation in Raila Odinga’s stronghold.More than 140km of roads have already been completed at a cost of over Sh20 billion since President Kenyatta became the head of state, with works going on in several parts of the county and others planned for the future. The 76km Kericho-Nyamasaria road, Kisian-Bondo-Osieko (45km) road, roads around the Kisumu airport and the rehabilitation of Nyamasaria-Kisumu Airport Road are some of the major paths where work has been completed. Construction, rehabilitation and maintenance works are ongoing on the following roads: Kisii-Ahero, Maseno-Kombewa-Kalandini, Maseno Town routes, Kisumu Boys-Mamboleo and Kisumu Township. The Jubilee administration has set aside at least Sh14 billion for these roads. At the moment, procurement is being done for the building of the road to Maseno University (Sh37.9 million), 45km Sondu-Kusa and Katito-Awasi road(Sh3.3 billion), Rabuor-Chiga-Kondele (Sh279.3 million), RIAT Market SOS-Kakamega (Sh616.7 million) and 2km Milimani roads (Sh279.3 million).President Kenyatta’s team is also planning to construct three major roads — Rabuor-Chiga-Kondele (17km) Ogal-Kisian Link (16km) and the Kisumu Northern Bypass (9km) — in the coming months at a combined cost of Sh4.8 billion. With NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s development in Kisumu County being questioned as polls approach, President Kenyatta — critics say — can achieved great infrastructural success in the four years he has been in office, despite the county largely supporting the opposition in the last general election.
