Duale was with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the town to urge residents register as voters in preparation for the August 8, general elections.

The youth blocked the main road to the town as they rioted while chanting Duale must go, Duale must go.

Duale will be defending his parliamentary seat during the August 8, polls and is expected to face former Parliament Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim who will be vying for the seat on a Wiper party ticket.

It took the intervention of Uhuru to calm the situation before the Jubilee leaders' convoy snaked its way into Garissa town where they addressed a rally.

Maalim has been at loggerheads with Duale who he accuses of failing to develop the constituency.

Recently, he accused Duale of promoting hate speech when he accused him of planning to evict non-Somalis from Garissa town.

The incident happened a day after a similar one in Bungoma County where youth blocked Deputy President William Ruto from addressing a rally in Bungoma town.
