[Photo: hivisasa.com]Telecommunication firm, Safaricom has launched 'Connected Farmer', a mobile phone application to help agricultural processing businesses by opening a communication line with farmers.Safaricom HOD Enterprise segment Fred Kioo, said the solution enables organisations transact with farmers by leveraging M-Pesa to make and receive payments securely. "It also helps register and key in information such as expected production quantities helping processors plan especially on pick up and work force resulting in overall cost reduction in production," he said during the launch in Eldoret town, Thursday.“Our aim is to digitise the end to end operations of agricultural produce processing firms creating supply chain efficiencies, linking farmers to commercial markets while facilitating productivity improvements. Farmers only pay Sh75 per month to use the application," he added. He reiterated that over 80,000 farmers had subscribed to the service.Connected Farmer is a partnership between Safaricom and Mezzanine Ware, a company that specializes in developing mobile enabled solutions for businesses.
