An SGR passenger train has registered its first accident.

The train on Saturday knocked down and instantly killed a cow attempting to cross the railway line.

The cow is believed to have found access into the line after elephants destroyed the fence bordering it.

At the time of the accident, the train was headed for Mariakani.

"After knocking the cow, the train slowed down but continued with its journey to the station," said officials as quoted by the Star.

The official decried the current situation where many pastoralists graze their animals around that section because the fences have not been repaired.

"Herders graze their animals in the area because the grass is greener on the other side of the line," the SGR official said.

This was the first mishap of the Sh327 billion SGR since it was launched on May 31.
