A Sh230 billion high-speed highway is set to be constructed after Bechtel International signed an agreement with Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA).

"Bechtel has been selected to build the first high-speed expressway in Kenya. The 473-kilometre highway will improve connectivity and safety," KeNHA's director general Peter Mundinia said as reported by The Standard.

According to reports the project will be funded by the US Export-Import and overseas Private Investment Corporation.

"The highway will have four lanes with provisions for future expansion to six  and 19 interchanges," Mr.Mundinia said.

KeNHA has stated that the construction will be completed as soon as possible. Betchel has been ranked one of the largest companies when it comes to construction world wide and it has already based one of its offices in Nairobi.

The average time it takes to drive from Nairobi to Mombasa is around 10 to 12 hours however with introduction of SGR it was reduced to 4 hours and 30 minutes. The introduction of this new high speed highway is set to cut the amount of time it takes to drive to 4 hours.
