The six, a man, his wife, their two sons and their two daughter-inlaws were frog-marched along a street in Migori town after it was discovered no one of them was in possession of the national identification document.

By law, without an ID card, one cannot register as voter and can therefore not vote in any election.

A resident who spoke to this writer said the six were smoked out of their houses after youth were alerted that they had no IDs.

A group of youth in Migori town has volunteered to campaign for the ongoing Mass Voter Registration exercise ahead of the August elections.

They move from house to house telling those with ID cards to go to the nearest voter registration centre and register and those without the document to go and apply for.

"At Rabuor area in Suna East, a man and his wife did not have IDs," one of the youth was quoted as saying.

"His two sons and their two wives also did not have IDs. So, in other words, the whole family does not transact any business with any bank and they also don't use M-Pesa services. This has to end."

During the same operation, another man said to be 55 years old was flashed out of his house and ordered to go and apply for an ID card.

The man whose name was withheld acknowledged that since he was born in 1963, he had never voted.

ODM leader Raila Odinga after the IEBC launched the Mass Voter Registration exercise told residents of Nyanza region to come out in large numbers and register as voters.

During the 2013 general election, many people from the region were accused of failing the opposition chief as they never voted.

The latest data from the IEBC indicates that less than 100,000 residents of Nyanza had registered as voters.
