A 76-year-old woman died yesterday after a speeding matatu struck her as she herded her donkey across the road at Kwa Mathithu stage along Kitui-Machakos road.

Ms Mutheo Kathyiki died on the spot due to suspected internal injuries and police have arrested the driver, Jackson Muigai, in relation to the case, according to Lower Yatta OCPD Patrick Makoha.

Eyewitnesses said the driver immediately alighted from the vehicle and tried to flee for fear of his life but members of the public nabbed him and handed him to the police.

Mr Makoha said the driver could not stop the Machakos-bound vehicle in time to avoid hitting the elderly woman and her donkey.

The animal survived but with a broken hind limb.

The police chief as well cautioned drivers against speeding to avoid causing similar accidents in future.

"We suddenly heard a loud bang and rushed there to help her but discovered she was already dead. She was lying in a pool of blood," said one of the eyewitnesses.

The driver was escorted to Kitui Central police station alongside the vehicle while the body was taken to Kitui General Hospital's mortuary.
