Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has said that there are no demonstrators in Kisumu and Mathare.

Speaking on Saturday over the police civilian hostilities witnessed in Nairobi and Kisumu Friday night and Saturday morning, Matiang'i said he was not aware of any opposition demonstrators.

He said he was only aware of looters in Kisumu, and that police were there to arrest them.

"Even in these areas I have mentioned, there are no demonstrations they are looters, and looters are criminals that ought to be arrested," he said.

"Draw a line between peaceful protesters and opportunistic criminals, looters. For the latter police will respond differently. Why on earth would police shoot at peaceful protesters?"

"In this country, how many times have police officers escorted protesters hurling insults in these same streets?" he asked.
