The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary general Francis Atwoli has urged Nairobians to elect a leader who will steer the county to greater heights.

Atwoli said the capital city "needs a serious driver" who will bring about the desired turn-around that Nairobi residents are yearning for.

He took issue with Governor Evans Kidero saying the city is littered with garbage, citing the junction between South C and Mombasa Road.

He noted that the garbage and filthiness will no doubt drive away would-be investors, adding that it has lost its former glory.

He said Rwanda's capital city, Kigali is neat unlike Nairobi, yet Kenya is a big economy compared to Rwanda's.

“Nairobians should wake up and provide a driver to steer the county not a political or party friend. This is the gateway of our investors. It is the headquarters of most organisations/firms in eastern and central Africa,” said Atwoli Wednesday night during an interview on Citizen TV.

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko of Jubilee Party, independents Peter Kenneth and Miguna Miguna are among those eyeing Kidero's seat.

On the heckling that characterised President Uhuru and NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga's rallies in Kisumu and Baringo respectively on Wednesday, Atwoli urged Kenyans to be tolerant to each other and allow politicians to campaign freely across the country devoid of such vices.

He added that Kenya needs a re-birth and Kenyans should elect leaders who can drive the agenda of the nation and not their selfish interests.
