Two suspected Wakali Kwanza members have been arrested for allegedly attempting to torch Mombasa’s Kongowea market.

The suspects were nabbed on Monday night as they tried to access the market through the main gate.Confirming the incident, Kisauni police boss Christopher Rotich said security officers were informed about the suspects’ plans and moved swiftly to arrest them before they got a chance to execute them."We had information about the incident and moved fast and that’s how we managed to arrest two suspects. The CID has taken over the case and investigations are ongoing,” said Rotich, as quoted by Baraka FM. Kongowea market was constructed at a cost of Sh444 million following a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta.Meanwhile, Rotich has cautioned residents and leaders planning to take part in illegal demonstrations, saying they will face dire consequences.“We are warning all those planning to participate in illegal demonstrations. Police are on high alert and we have increased patrols. We are urging everyone to maintain peace,” he added, as quoted by the daily.
