Two school going children have been hospitalized in Kisumu County after they started experiencing symptoms similar to those of cholera.

The two, a nine-year-old girl and a boy have been admitted at Jaramogi Odinga Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) where they are receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, JOOTRH medical superintendent Dr Juliana Otieno said the girl was brought to the hospital in critical condition.

“The county plans to review certification of food vendors within Kisumu as a measure to mitigate the outbreak,” said Dr Ogaja who was speaking during a press briefing.

Kisumu County Executive for Health Dr Elizabeth Ogaja said the Kisumu county government has set up four cholera isolation centres.

Ms Ogala said the school boy has been admitted at one of the newly created centre where medics are dealing with cholera cases only.

“Due to the ongoing nurses' strike, the hospital has contracted nurse to take care of cholera patients. The cholera patients will be attended to at the cholera isolation centres,” said Ms Ogala.

Currently, 28 patients are admitted at Kodiaga Hospital and Port Florence Hospital with cholera-like symptoms.
