Residents of Uasin Gishu county have been asked to use renewable source of energies in order to protect the environment.

According to Ruth Kemboi, a hopeful for the County's Women Representative seat, the rate at which the environment is being depleted due to the use of firewood is very alarming.

“Most people are still using the traditional methods of cooking food that is firewood. This has contributed to the depletion of our environment. We need to adopt new ways of renewable energy that will help us protect our environment,” Kemboi, in Eldoret.

She said the use of biogas was affordable in the county since most people in the rural areas were farmers and the project would be viable through empowerment.

Ruth said the raw material for biogas which is cow dung was readily available and if adopted, would reduce the effects of environmental degradation.

“There are success stories on biogas and we should also implement here in our county. Use of firewood was common in the rural areas where trees are being felled but let us protect our environment by using friendly source of energy,” she added.

“If not biogas we have energy saving Jikos and let us plant more trees to replace what we have cut down.''

Ruth said the 10 per cent forest cover envisaged in the vision 2030 blue print would not be achieved if Kenyans would not adopt new ways of renewable energy in order to save trees from being cut down for firewood.
