A Human Rights organisation in Eldoret town has threatened to take legal action against a Catholic priest who allegedly ordered for the closure of a public school in Soy constituency, Uasin Gishu county.

According to the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy Programs officer Kipkorir Ng'etich, the Priest Thomas Kigen, directed that Kipsomba primary school be closed for three months following a land tussle between the school and the Catholic church which is the sponsor.

Parents and teachers at the school are now up in arms over the matter that has disputed learning at the public facility.

"The Catholic church is only a sponsor in this school and the priest has no authority to close it down," noted the school's head teacher Mary Goreti.

"They wanted to lure me to sign a document saying I have given them three acres of the school land but I refused and told them that I have no authority to do so," she added.

Parents and teachers at the school now want the ministry of Education to take action against the Catholic priest and ensure the school is reopened.
