A Mombasa court on Monday sentenced a woman to life in prison after she was found guilty of drug trafficking. 

Mercy Awour had been arraigned in court for trafficking 1,089 rolls of marijuana valued at Sh217, 800. Police constable Geoffrey Maina told the court that his officers arrested Awour on December 16, 2016 at her home in Migadini area following a tip from the public.“We proceeded to the house as directed, got in and on searching we found a blue metallic box and a bag under the bed containing what was suspected to be marijuana,” said Maina, as quoted by Baraka FM.In his ruling senior resident magistrate Edigah Kagoni said the court has adequate evidence against the accused.“I find the prosecution has proved its case against the accused person beyond reasonable doubt. I find the accused person guilty of the offence of trafficking narcotic drugs,” he ruled.In her defense, Awour denied the allegations leveled against her, saying she was not aware of the existence of the drugs in her house.The court directed her to file an appeal within 14 days following the ruling.
