Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has declared he no longer needs security from government.

Joho, who spoke at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi where opposition leaders met to cement the formation of the National Super Alliance said since he returned from Ghana, he has stayed without security.

Government, last week, directed for the withdrawal of Joho's security when he was away in Accra, Ghana attending the inauguration of Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Besides Joho, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi's security personnel were also withdrawn.

"From the time I left Ghana, I have stayed without bodyguards and I can tell you I am the happiest man on earth," he said to the applause of the audience.

"I drove myself to this venue and I am going to drive myself home. When it comes to  security, you, the citizens will guard me."

Joho has been critical of the Jubilee administration since 2013 when it came to power and the last time President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Mombasa, he was involved in a verbal altercation with the governor.

Joho criticised Uhuru of sidelining Coast region in development saying he has discriminated against residents of the region.
